Krampus, St. Nicolas's demonic counterpart. Curling horns protrude from the creatures cloaked head and sharp rotting fingernails extended from the holes in his cloak. His long beard trails onto the floor between his hoofed feet, the stomps of which cause children to cower in their beds. Hollowed eyes sit in mottled sagging skin, mouth agape and long tongue wavering over stained fangs. The woollen cloak which leaves deep trails in the snow is weighed down with chains, bells and birch sticks used to beat naughty children before hurling them down to the underworld. The half goat half demon only appears on the night of the 5th of December, trudging and clinking through darkened streets. As he roams, his horns scrape the overhanging buildings, and children whisper to themselves that it is only the wind.
